What made you become a writer?
When I was eight years old, I wrote a story about a rabbit. I can’t
remember the story any more, but I’ve never forgotten the moment
when my mother said, ”That story is good! You could be a writer!”
Something inside me clicked and I knew that’s what I wanted to do
with my life. I’ve been writing ever since.
Did you ever have another job?
Yes, I used to be a lawyer, but writing books for kids is much more fun.
Why do you write books about Asia?
I became fascinated with Asia during the twelve years while I lived there.
Now I live back in my hometown, Chicago, but I miss Asia, and enjoy reading
about it, and sometimes traveling back to Asia. My stories evolve out
of my reading and travel.
Do you have any kids?
Yep, I have one son named Ross. He’s does judo and loves anime.
His interest in ninja prompted me to write Blue Fingers, and I dedicated
that book to him and his dad.
Do you wish you could be a ninja?
You bet!! Don’t you, too??
